Cookies

Readers get no cookies from Actopolis: no analytics, advertising or social cookies. Only an editors' sign in cookie and a network security cookie can be set.

Readers get no cookies from the magazine. There are no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies and no social media cookies. Reading articles, browsing the strands and writing to us through the contact form place nothing from us on your device.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. Some cookies are needed for a site to work, for instance to remember that someone has signed in. Others are used to count visitors or follow people across sites for advertising. We use none of the second kind.

The two cookies that can exist

Only two strictly necessary cookies can be set when you use the site, and as a reader you will normally see neither.

Cookie Set by When it is set What it does How long it lasts
Editors' session cookie actopolis.net Only when an editor signs in to the back office Keeps that editor signed in Expires after 24 hours
Security cookie Our content delivery network Only when the network needs to check incoming traffic Tells people from automated bots and helps block attacks Short, set by the network

The editors' cookie is never set for readers. It exists so that the people who write and correct articles can sign in to the site's back office, and it disappears after a day.

The security cookie comes from the content delivery network that delivers our pages and protects the server. It does not identify you and is not used for advertising or to track you across other websites.

Affiliate links

Some guides link to Amazon or to tour partners through the CJ Affiliate network. When you follow one of those links, you arrive on that company's site, and it may set its own cookies there to record that you came from us, so that we can be paid a commission if you buy something. Those cookies belong to Amazon, CJ or the partner, follow their policies, and are never set by actopolis.net. Partner banner images in some city guides are loaded from CJ's servers; we add no tracking code to them. More in the privacy notice.

Why there is no cookie banner

European rules require consent for cookies that are not strictly necessary. Both cookies above are strictly necessary: one for signing in, one for keeping the site safe. Since there are no optional cookies, there is nothing to accept or refuse, so there is no banner. If we ever wanted to add an optional cookie, we would ask for your consent first and update this page.

Managing cookies in your browser

Every common browser lets you see, delete and block cookies, usually under Privacy or Security in its settings. You can delete cookies for a single site or for all sites, block third party cookies, or browse in a private window, which clears cookies when you close it.

Blocking cookies will not change how the magazine reads. If you block every cookie, the network's security check may occasionally ask you to confirm you are a person more than once.

Questions

For anything about cookies or your data, write to editors@actopolis.net. How we handle personal data in general is set out in the privacy notice.
