Art in public space, cities and the people who use them

Terms of use

The terms for reading and sharing Actopolis: copyright in articles and photographs, quoting and permissions, corrections, links, liability and Austrian law.

These terms apply to everyone who reads or uses actopolis.net, which is run by the editors of Actopolis. By using the site you accept them. If anything is unclear, write to editors@actopolis.net.

Using the site

The magazine is free to read, and you do not need an account. Please do not:

  • interfere with the site, overload it or probe it for weaknesses;
  • try to reach the editors' back office or any part of the site that is not public;
  • copy the site in bulk with automated tools in a way that strains the server;
  • use the contact form for advertising, spam or abuse.

We may block traffic that harms the site or other readers.

Copyright in articles and photographs

Articles, photographs, illustrations and the design of the site are protected by copyright. The rights belong to the writers, to the magazine or to the people who licensed their work to us.

You are welcome to:

  • read and print articles for personal use;
  • share links to articles anywhere you like;
  • quote short passages, with credit to the writer and the magazine and, online, a link to the article.

You need our written permission to:

  • republish a whole article, or a substantial part of one, on another website, in print or in a newsletter;
  • publish a translation of an article;
  • reuse our photographs or illustrations;
  • use any of our material for commercial purposes.

Ask by email, saying what you would like to use and where.

Images

Some pictures are photographs of the places described. Others are illustrations made to accompany an article; they show the kind of place or scene under discussion, not necessarily the exact site. Captions and image descriptions say what a picture shows.

Many photographs show artworks: murals, sculptures, monuments. The artist usually holds copyright in the work itself, and the rules on photographing and reusing public artworks differ from country to country. The fact that we show a mural does not give you any right to reproduce it. If you are an artist and think one of our images uses your work unfairly, please tell us.

Accuracy and corrections

We check facts carefully, but cities change fast. A mural is painted over, a museum moves, a festival shifts its dates. Each article reflects what was true on the date it was published. Before you travel or plan around an article, check with the museum, the festival or the city itself.

If you find an error, please tell us through the contact page. We check every report, correct mistakes, and note each correction at the foot of the article.

Links to other websites

We link to other sites when they are useful, such as a museum's own pages or a city's information on permits. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their availability or how they handle your data. A link is not an endorsement.

No professional advice

Some articles are practical guides: how a large mural gets made, how to run a workshop in a park, how to plan a festival in public space, how to visit a memorial. They are general information. Local rules differ between countries, cities and even districts, and they change. Nothing on the site is legal, planning, safety, insurance or financial advice. Before you put up a scaffold, close a street or invite a crowd, check with the local authority and, where needed, a qualified professional.

Contributions sent to the editors

When you send us a tip, a correction, a photograph or a piece of text, you confirm that you are entitled to share it. We may use the facts you send in our reporting. We will not publish your photographs or your own words at any length without asking you first and agreeing how you are credited. Please do not send material you received in confidence or are not allowed to pass on.

Limitation of liability

The site is offered free of charge and as it is. We work to keep it accurate and online, but we cannot promise that it will always be available, free of errors or up to date. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for loss or damage that results from using the site or relying on its content.

None of this limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit, such as liability for deliberate or grossly negligent conduct, or for injury to life, body or health.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example if the site gains a new feature. The date at the top of the page shows the current version. If you keep using the site after a change, the updated terms apply.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Austrian law, and the courts of Vienna have jurisdiction over any dispute about them. If you use the site as a consumer and live in another country, this choice does not take away the protection of the mandatory consumer rules of your own country, and you may also be able to bring a claim in the courts where you live.
